Dealing With Cannabis Packaging Waste

There has been a lot of criticism about the excess amount of packaging used in the cannabis industry. While many people are lobbying to get this changed, one company in Ontario is working to collect this cannabis waste. Purple Hills is committed to advancing sustainability in the Ontario cannabis industry. With the recent launch of their in-store Purple Bins they have placed recycling containers in almost 600 cannabis stores in Ontario, and so far have collected one million grams of cannabis packaging waste.

The Purple Bins initiative aims to address waste management within the cannabis industry by providing a convenient and accessible waste collection solution in stores. These bins not only encourage customers to responsibly dispose of their packaging materials but also serve as a visible symbol of the store’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Alexa Roland of Purple Hills says, “Through proactive measures aimed at tackling packaging waste within Ontario’s cannabis sector, we have the opportunity to safeguard our environment, preserve valuable resources, and forge a path towards lasting sustainability. At Purple Hills, we stand firm in our dedication to champion policies that prioritize environmental stewardship, embrace circular economy values, and foster meaningful progress within the cannabis industry.”

Lobbying to Revise Regulations

In tandem with their in-store efforts, Purple Hills is working to minimize the cannabis industry’s impact by petitioning the regulator to revise packaging regulations for the greater environmental sustainability of the industry.

By advocating for reduced waste and increased recyclability, Purple Hills is striving to create a more environmentally conscious cannabis sector that aligns with Ontario’s broader sustainability goals.
