Canopy Growth’s New Chief Legal Officer

It was announced today by Canopy Growth Corporation that it has appointed Christelle Gedeon as its new Chief Legal Officer. It’s a move of real intent by the leading cultivator and purveyor of cannabis, and one that the company’s CEO, David Klein, believes positions Canopy Growth well for future expansion and success.

“Christelle is a proven leader in the legal and cannabis industries, and we are excited to have her join Canopy Growth as we continue to build the leading brand-driven cannabis company in North America,” he says.

Continued Growth

And, there’s certainly already a lot to build on. Canopy Growth is one of the world’s leading diversified cannabis companies, producing top quality cannabis and hemp products, as well as cannabis devices. And, it also operates nearly 70 retail establishments under its Tweed and Tokyo Smoke banners, located throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland.

Experience and Accolades

A graduate of McGill University, Gedeon, who has more than a decade of legal experience, was recently named one of Canada’s Law Department Leaders of the Year, included on the 2020 Legal 500 GC Powerlist, and presented with the Canadian General Counsel Awards Tomorrow’s Leader in 2019.

In addition, she is also a registered trademark agent in and holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Toronto. Combined with her expertise related to the cannabis industry, Gedeon is also well-versed concerning complex regulatory structures, intellectual property management, corporate governance, government relations, and strategic acquisitions.

Plethora of Accomplishments

Prior to her appointment to the role of Chief Legal Officer at Canopy Growth, Gedeon played significant roles in successfully completing more than 50 mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments. She has served as partner at Fasken, a leading Canadian law firm, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Aphria, Inc., where she oversaw a reverse takeover of Tilray, Inc., and, most recently, as Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary for The Metals Company (TMC).

Confident Leadership

It’s an impressive list of accolades and accomplishments that Gedeon has managed to amass as a result of her experience and astute strategic ability within the commercial legal realm and cannabis industry. And, it’s experience and demonstrated cannabis and commercial expertise that provides Klein with the confidence that the company’s new appointment will pay dividends.

“As a company, we have set clear priorities including achieving profitability while advancing our competitive positioning through a premium focus in Canada, high-impact CPG brands, and the continued growth of our U.S. THC ecosystem,” he says. “I am confident that Christelle’s commercial and legal acumen will be key to further bringing our strategy to fruition.”
