As of July 30th, Albertans can have legal cannabis delivered to their homes. Uber Eats has partnered with Leafly to provide this service.
The Uber Eats app has an age gate, so that Albertans 18 and over can place orders from local licensed cannabis retailers in the app, and have it delivered to their door by the retailer’s provincially certified staff. The virtual storefront is managed by the retailer.
“More Albertans are accessing legal cannabis than ever before. We are partnering with industry leaders like Leafly to help retailers offer safe, convenient options for people in Alberta to purchase legal cannabis for delivery directly to their homes. This will help reduce impaired driving and improve road safety,” says Klaas Knieriem, General Manager of Grocery and Retail for Uber Eats in Canada. “Over the last few years, we have invested heavily in our delivery offering and selection has expanded tremendously. Uber Eats has grown quickly to become a versatile platform usable by diverse businesses large and small.”
Partnership with Leafly
“We are thrilled to continue our work with Uber Eats to help licensed retailers bring safe, legal cannabis to people across Canada,” says Yoko Miyashita, CEO of Leafly. “Leafly has been empowering Canada’s cannabis marketplace for more than five years and it is exciting to expand this partnership to Alberta and help licensed cannabis retailers grow their businesses.”
“Our focus at Dank Cannabis has always been to bring a stress-free retail experience to our customers since we started our business in 2021,” notes Arshi Kalkat, co-founder of Dank Cannabis, which is one of five retailers in Alberta currently using this service. “This partnership will help us continue to do that and expand our reach to even more people in Calgary. Just like the in-store experience, our provincially certified delivery staff understand and comply with local regulations around cannabis transactions, including checking ID.”
This expansion to Alberta comes a year after Uber Eats and Leafly brought cannabis delivery to British Columbia. Uber Eats and Leafly’s partnership began with Ontario in 2022, which was the first time in the world that cannabis delivery was available on a major third-party delivery platform.
Encouraging Safe Consumption
This partnership will help licensed cannabis stores connect with existing cannabis users safely and conveniently. Research from Public First shows that some cannabis users drive after consumption with 1 in 7 (14%) of cannabis users admitting to having driven a vehicle within two hours of consuming cannabis. Delivery options like those available through Uber Eats are expected to help decrease impaired driving and improve safety on the road.
